Luana Adelina Pires, Luiza Pires and Ablay Sowe were able to speak no fewer than seven languages between them – but none of them held formal English qualifications.
Thanks to the Marches Education Partnership pre-employment course, they have now been able to secure positions as health care assistants.
After completing their 12-week module, the trio secured posts at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, and are now progressing onto a level three health and social care course.

Bill Llewelyn says he is ‘over the moon’ to have secured a permanent worthwhile job.
He’d applied for so many positions without even being offered an interview – but after attending a pre-employment course, he had five interviews and was offered four jobs.
The course was delivered by SBC Training in conjunction with the new Marches Education Partnership. providing two weeks of training to people who wanted to learn about adult social care and prepare to begin a career in that sector.
Bill had always worked until some family issues disrupted his life. He struggled to get back on his feet and his DWP job coach suggested the course.
Bill said: “The course has turned my life around – I got so much from it. The other participants were great, we helped and encouraged one another, and I can’t thank the course leaders enough.
“Some of the biggest help for me was in job search skills, ensuring my CV was to the best standard and preparing for interviews. I am now employed by Coverage Care, at Greenfields Care Home. I am still learning and developing confidence but it is a great feeling at the end of the shift to know that I have been of help to someone who needs it.”
Jonathan Cook, home manager at Greenfields, said: “We have seen a decrease in the number of people entering the social care sector. This course enables people to gain an insight and have an understanding of the care sector before applying for jobs within the sector.
“It gives them increased knowledge, and therefore a greater chance of being offered a job. We are glad to have Bill on our team; he is settling in to the team here very quickly.”
